Highlights of Lingshan Island

Chengkouzi Village

Chengkouzi Village is the largest village on Lingshan Island, home to 229 households and located right next to the dock. At the entrance of the village, on the left side, stands a tall stone tablet inscribed with “Shuilingshan Island,” while on the right is the iconic “Fucui Pavilion” (the landmark of Lingshan Island), where several fisherwomen can often be seen leisurely weaving nets.

As you stroll along the ascending streets of the village, you’ll encounter charming small houses and red-tiled buildings nestled amidst lush greenery, following the natural contours of the hillside. The village center features a north-south street that runs along the hillside, lined with uniquely designed restaurants and eateries. Visitors can indulge in the delicious seafood while experiencing the vibrant lifestyle of the fishing community.

Wai Tou Ding

Wai Tou Ding, the highest peak on Lingshan Island, stands at an elevation of 513.6 meters, resembling a giant bamboo shoot reaching up towards the sky. Many visitors come to this peak to enjoy breathtaking sunrise views, offering an exceptional vantage point. Climbing to this first high island is a test of strength and endurance, with two routes available for ascent. The longer route along the road from the dock takes approximately 180 minutes, while the fastest path via the hiking trail can be completed in just 45 minutes. On clear days, it is said that the Japanese archipelago can be seen from the summit.

Lao Hu Zui

Lao Hu Zui, located at the southern tip of Lingshan Island, features a striking cliff that resembles a fierce tiger poised majestically. Its front paws rest on the rocky shores, while its wide-open mouth seems to roar towards the sea. The stone wall beside the “tiger’s mouth” is inscribed with the characters “老虎嘴” (Lao Hu Zui).

From the viewing pavilion on the northwestern cliff of Lao Hu Zui, visitors can observe the dramatic interplay of winds and clouds above and the vibrant hues of sunset over the sea. Walking along the island’s circular road into the “tiger’s mouth,” one can see the large rock formations that form its “upper jaw” and “throat,” sloping upward into the sky. The sounds of the wind above and the crashing waves below create a thunderous echo within the “tiger’s mouth.” At sunset, if you look back towards Lao Hu Zui from the southeast, you’ll witness a magnificent scene: a red sun perfectly poised within the immense “tiger’s mouth,” creating a stunning and enchanting image known as “the tiger’s mouth cradling the sun.”

Shidao Stone Scenic Fishing Area

On the eastern side of Lingshan Island stands a small mountain with a coastline that appears as if it has been sharply carved away, known as “Shidao Stone” (试刀石). The lower part of Shidao Stone is submerged in seawater, and the notch that separates it from the mountain still looks freshly cut, resembling the edge of a knife. During low tide, this notch transforms into a passageway, allowing visitors to look up and see a narrow slice of sky, referred to as “Yixiantian” (一线天).

Shidao Stone also features a designated scenic fishing area. During July and August, the waters around Lingshan Island are filled with young mackerel, commonly known as “Hua Gun” (花棍) in this region. As summer arrives, tourists flock to this spot for sea fishing, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere on the island.

Beilai Stone Scenic Area

At the northeastern tip of Lingshan Island, in front of a sea-eroded cliff, lies an intriguing dark gray rock known as “Beilai Stone” (背来石). This unique stone is located in the intertidal zone, and when the tide rises, it is enveloped by the foaming white waves or adorned with gentle ripples, giving it a translucent appearance reminiscent of dark gray jade. When the tide recedes, Beilai Stone stands prominently among the reef, resembling a large lotus bud, with its outer petals seemingly ready to bloom.

Within the scenic area, there is also a small island known as “Little Lingshan”, located at the northern end of Lingshan Island. This island is shaped like a turtle stretching its neck and paddling its limbs as it swims toward the main island. On Little Lingshan, there is a beacon tower, which has been weathered by time. The current structure is a reconstruction built on the original foundation.

Legend of Little Lingshan

According to legend, after the Water Spirit, Longnu, settled on the island, the Dragon King sent a spirit turtle to search for her. Water Spirit was pure-hearted and kind, endearing herself to both mortals and deities alike. As the spirit turtle neared the island, a beacon tower mysteriously appeared atop the small hill at the northern end of the island. The turtle was trapped in the sea just outside the hill, struggling to swim closer but unable to reach the island.

Thus, the spirit turtle swam endlessly in the waters north of Lingshan Island for countless years, eventually taking on the shape of Little Lingshan, yet never losing its determination.
