How To Choose Between The Three Laoshan Scenic Routes

Laoshan Mountain in Qingdao is a stunning destination that combines breathtaking mountain and sea views. Spanning 446 square kilometers, it offers three main scenic routes that cater to different interests, whether you’re an adventure-seeker, nature lover, or visiting for the first time. This guide will help you choose between the Jufeng, Beijiushui, and Yangkou & Taiqing routes, so you can make the most of your visit to Laoshan.

1. Jufeng Route (Central Route)

Best For: Hiking enthusiasts

The Jufeng Route is a paradise for those who love to hike and challenge themselves with steep climbs. Laoshan’s highest peak, standing over 1,000 meters above sea level, can be found on this route. To start your journey, head to the Dahedong Visitor Center (大河东游客服务中心), where you’ll need to board a shuttle bus to reach the starting point.

Along the way, you’ll encounter famous landmarks such as The First Famous Mountain by the Sea (海上名山第一), Vermilion Bird Rock (朱雀石), Lingqi Peak (灵旗峰), Xiantian Bridge (先天桥), and Zhaixing Pavilion (摘星亭). There is also a cable car available starting at 9 AM, which provides a convenient way to ascend the mountain while taking in the stunning panoramic views.

2. Beijiushui Scenic Area (North Route)

Best For: Nature lovers and serene landscapes

The Beijiushui Scenic Area offers some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes, especially after rainfall, when streams and waterfalls cascade down the mountain, creating a picturesque, tranquil atmosphere. To reach this area, take Metro Line 11 to Beijiushui Station (北九水站), then transfer to a shuttle bus that takes you to the scenic area.

The main highlights include the Nine Waters Eighteen Pools (九水十八潭), and it’s easy to follow the scenic loop trail that winds through the area. While there is no cable car here, the easy terrain and stunning surroundings make for a relaxing hike.

3. Yangkou & Taiqing Scenic Area (South Route)

Best For: First-time visitors and cultural enthusiasts

For first-time visitors to Laoshan, the Yangkou and Taiqing Scenic Area offers the best combination of mountain and sea views, as well as rich cultural heritage. This route features breathtaking coastal landscapes, and it is the only place along China’s 10,000-kilometer coastline where a mountain peak rises over 1,000 meters directly from the sea.

The Yangkou Scenic Area is known for its excellent hiking opportunities, while the Taiqing Scenic Area is home to the 2,000-year-old Taiqing Palace (太清宫), one of the most significant Taoist temples in China. You’ll also find the Mingxia Cave (明霞洞), Shangqing Palace (上清宫), and the Dragon Pool Waterfall (龙潭瀑布). The shuttle bus here operates between three key stops: Bashui River (八水河), Taiqing Palace, and Mingxia Cave. A cable car service is available starting at 9 AM for easier access to the higher viewpoints.
