How to Reach Taiqing Scenic Area:

To start your journey to Taiqing, you can either use public transport or drive to the Dahedong Customer Service Center (大河东客服中心), where the Taiqing Scenic Area begins. From here, proceed to the Central Hub, where you can purchase your tickets. Tickets can be bought either through the official WeChat account or at the ticket vending machines at the entrance, much like at a train station. The prices are consistent across all platforms, and if you have any discount eligibility, don’t forget to bring the necessary documents, including your ID card.

Since private cars are not allowed to enter the area, it’s essential to take the sightseeing bus from Dahedong to the Taiqing line. Be sure to choose the Taiqing route for the sightseeing bus.

Map Of Taiqing Scenic Area

This pure hiking route offers fantastic views of both the mountains and the sea, as well as two ancient temples nestled in the mountainside. The path is a circular route that is generally less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the serene beauty of Laoshan’s forests and ocean without the hustle and bustle. The entire hike covers an elevation gain of 770 meters, with a steep incline. While the route is relatively short, it requires stamina and careful pacing.

Depending on your speed, the hike will take about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. It’s advisable to take breaks, especially to rest and enjoy the stunning surroundings. There are several scenic spots along the way that offer great opportunities for photography and relaxation.

Important Considerations:

Cable Car Option: If you want to save some energy, there’s an option to take the cable car up to the Yakou (垭口) direction. Before starting, make sure to check if the cable car is running. While the cable car takes you up to a lower point, you’ll need to walk another 400 meters to reach Mingxia Cave (明霞洞). Alternatively, you can choose to go downhill to the Bashui River (八水河) direction, which is mostly downhill and will conserve your energy, though the views might not be as spectacular.

Weather and Wind: The area is surrounded by mountains, creating a calm environment with reduced wind, giving you a feeling of being sheltered in nature.

Facilities: There are several restrooms along the route, and during peak seasons (from November to April), tea stands may be available. However, if you’re visiting off-season, make sure to bring your own food and drinks.

Seasonal Highlights:

  • Shangqing Palace (上清宫) is famous for its ancient trees. In the fall, you can enjoy the golden ginkgo leaves, and in the spring, you’ll find beautiful magnolia and cherry blossoms.
  • Mingxia Cave offers spectacular mountain and sea views, and in the surrounding area, you’ll see ginkgo trees and crepe myrtle in full bloom. Wild rhododendrons are also in bloom along the trail, adding splashes of color to the landscape.

Additional Tips:

  • Footwear: One of the most important items for this hike is proper footwear. Avoid wearing dress shoes or high-heeled shoes. Hiking shoes are the best option, as they provide ankle support and traction on rocky surfaces. If you don’t have hiking shoes, a pair of high-ankle running shoes with good grip will work as well. Sandals are not recommended for this type of trail.
  • Gear: You won’t need trekking poles, but a hat and backpack are essential. Pack some fruit, snacks, and at least two bottles of water per person, especially if you’re visiting after April, when temperatures can rise.
