Located in the eastern part of Huiquan and Taiping Cape in Qingdao, Badaguan Scenic Area is a unique district often compared to the Bund in Shanghai. It features a stunning blend of architectural styles from more than 20 countries, including Germany, France, the UK, Greece, Japan, and Spain. Known as the “Exhibition of World Architecture,” Badaguan is one of Qingdao’s most iconic and historic areas.
The architectural complex of Badaguan consists of two parts: the Taiping Cape area, with buildings dating back to 1919, and the Badaguan area, developed in the late 1920s and into the 1930s. Today, the area houses more than 300 historical buildings with diverse architectural styles, covering a total area of approximately 145,000 square meters.
The name “Badaguan” refers to eight streets, each named after famous passes along the Great Wall of China. These streets were once home to high-ranking officials and foreign diplomats, creating a luxurious villa district. Each street in the area is lined with a specific type of tree or plant, adding to the district’s unique charm. There’s a saying, “One pass, one tree; each pass, different trees,” which captures the essence of Badaguan’s landscape. For example, Shaoguan Road is lined with peach trees, Shanhaiguan Road with French plane trees, and Zijingguan Road with cedars, giving visitors a scenic display of distinct seasonal beauty.
Walking through Badaguan is like stepping back in time. As you stroll along its tree-shaded streets, you can glimpse the blue sea in the distance while admiring the variety of architectural styles up close. The contrast of lush greenery, colorful flowers, and stately buildings creates a serene atmosphere, making it easy to forget the hustle and bustle of the city.
Due to various reasons, most of the old villas and buildings in Badaguan are not open to the public. They remain in a state of quiet seclusion, their rich histories largely unknown to visitors, but their grandeur can still be appreciated from the outside. This adds an air of mystery and nostalgia to the area, further enhancing its allure.
Badaguan is not just an architectural treasure; it’s a peaceful retreat where history, culture, and natural beauty coexist, making it a must-visit destination for anyone in Qingdao.
