Highlights of Fushan Bay
May Fourth Square
May Fourth Square, home to the iconic sculpture “May Wind,” is a significant landmark in Qingdao, commemorating the May Fourth Movement. The square is divided into two parts by Donghai Road and features key attractions such as the municipal government building, a hidden fountain, the “May Wind” sculpture, and a spectacular sea fountain.
The sculpture stands at an impressive height of 30 meters and has a diameter of 27 meters, constructed from a spiraling steel structure. Its design features simple yet refined elements arranged to evoke the image of a rotating “wind,” making it one of Qingdao’s most recognizable sights.
In the southern part of the square, within Fushan Bay, lies a large fountain that shoots water columns up to 100 meters high, making it the tallest sea fountain in the country. The combination of artistic design and natural beauty creates a vibrant atmosphere, attracting both locals and tourists alike.
Details about the Fountains:
When visiting May Fourth Square, you must see the fountains. There are three main fountains in the square: the hidden fountain, the point fountain, and the impressive 100-meter sea fountain.
The hidden fountain is located in the northern square and can create a variety of patterns, varying in height and intensity from gentle to powerful. Just north of the “May Wind” sculpture is the point fountain, where water jets are installed at ground level in neat rows. During the summer, many children love to interact with the fountain, playfully running through the jets and enjoying the refreshing spray on their faces.
The highlight of May Fourth Square is the 100-meter sea fountain. The best time to appreciate its grandeur is at night when it is illuminated by vibrant lights. From a distance in front of the municipal government building, you can see the fountain’s water soaring into the air. As you approach, the sight of the water jetting upwards resembles a magnificent dragon leaping from the sea, creating a truly spectacular view.
Music Square
Music Square is located east of May Fourth Square and north of the Children’s Activity Center. Covering an area of 36,000 square meters, it is currently the largest music-themed cultural and leisure square in China. The square consists of five functional areas: the Tree Grove Area, Eccentric Square with Soft Sculptures, the Oval Square Area, the Ocean View Music Platform, and an underground shopping mall. These areas are arranged in a fan-shaped layout, creating a harmonious distribution of different expressive forms. When viewed from above, the square resembles a beautiful scallop nestled along the coastline.
Music Square is predominantly themed around music. The “Digital Piano King,” ground musical scores, and the background sound system collectively establish the musical ambiance of the square. Equipped with eight professional sound systems and thirty background speakers, visitors can enjoy excellent music quality no matter where they are in the square. Along the pedestrian walkways, there are piano-key-style benches, further enhancing the musical character of the space.
A large soft sculpture titled “Sail of Music,” standing at 20 meters high, features a realistic piano underneath, allowing visitors to play and have fun. The Ocean View Music Platform is designed to resemble an open musical score, displaying the main melodies of several famous world songs. Sensors beneath the musical notes can trigger different tunes when visitors step on them, creating an interactive musical experience.
Third Bathing Beach
The Third Bathing Beach is located on the eastern side of Taiping Cape. Although it is not very large, the water is crystal clear, making it a delightful spot for swimming while also enjoying the beautiful urban landscape of the island city. The experience is truly relaxing.
Along the beach, there are colorful and uniquely styled changing rooms, each equipped with warm freshwater showers, which are particularly convenient for swimmers who prefer not to rinse off with cold water. Adjacent to the beach is the Langyuan Café, a popular spot that has served as a filming location for various films and television dramas.
